Thomas Lindsay, whose students have populated this country’s finest universities, conservatories and summer festivals for many years, became a member of the applied music faculty at VCU in 2006, after serving 36 years as a respected violinist with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. Lindsay’s work on “The Art and Science of String Performance” (pub. Alfred) has made him the worldwide leading authority on the works of Samuel Applebaum.
During his career, Lindsay has been first violinist of the Paganiniana String Quartet and the Berlin String Quartet and has served as concertmaster of the New Jersey Pops Orchestra, the Atlantic Symphonette and the FAME Festival Orchestra. He has coached students for professional orchestra auditions and has taught master classes and presented workshops in many states and Canada for the American String Teachers’ Association, MTNA and at numerous colleges, including Yale University.
Tom Lindsay formed the New Jersey Youth Orchestra in conjunction with the NJSO, the South Jersey Youth Orchestra and the International FAME Festival. He has served as president of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra Board of Directors and artistic adviser to three conductors of the New York Youth Symphony at Carnegie Hall. When he relocated to Williamsburg, Va., Lindsay formed the Tidewater Intergenerational Orchestra. He is currently concertmaster of Symphonicity, the official orchestra of Virginia Beach, in residence at the new Sandler Center.
