The Miami University Symphony Orchestra is one of the most traditional musical organizations on campus. All musicians are selected through audition and the repertoire spans over all the eras of symphonic music, from Baroque until today. Members of the faculty coach the various sections on a regular basis, helping the ensemble achieve an individual sound and homogeneous performance style.
The University Symphony Orchestra is governed by an elected board of directors, who participates in most of the decision making process. It deals with marketing, public relations, personnel issues, organization of events, special concerts and international tours.
In addition to the symphonic repertoire, the symphony orchestra participates every year in an opera production and concerts focused on the choral symphonic repertoire. Our interest in diversification is also reflected in our combined work with other organizations. For example, in 2004 a selected instrumental ensemble from the orchestra participated in a rare performance of the fully staged version of Stravinsky's Soldier's Tale. In the fall of the same year, the group performed world music in conjunction with Global Rhythms, another university ensemble, having prestigious professional performers and Grammy award winners as soloists. In the Spring of 2006 the orchestra performed with Dave Brubeck and his ensemble in a gala concert.
The Miami University Symphony Orchestra participated in the Russian-American Orchestra Institute in Russia during the summer of 2005, performing side-by-side with the St. Petersburg State Chamber Orchestra. The concerts in Novgorod and St. Petersburg received outstanding reviews. In 2006 the orchestra was accepted into all the conferences that include college orchestras in the United States, selected by competitive audition: ASTA (American String Teachers Association) with NSOE (National School Orchestra Association) 2006 National Conference (we were the only college level orchestra invited); 2006 OMEA North Coast Professional Conference (we were one out of two college orchestras accepted); and the MENC National Conference in Salt Lake City (we were one out of two college level orchestras accepted). The group performed in Salt Lake City on April 20, 2006.
In the same year, the orchestra has been invited to be the official Ohio representative in the Mozart Orchestra Festival Celebration in Salzburg, Vienna and Prague, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the composer.
