Biography:
Alan J was born in Toronto on August 1st, 1985. His grandma was the first to notice Alan’s potential as a singer, when he would mimic her lullabies at a young age. By five years-old, Alan started singing publicly in a church choir in Oakville. He attended St. Michael's Choir School during most of his elementary school years. At age 11, Alan J traveled internationally, singing at events with the choir. At 13, he became a member of ACTRA (Canadian Actor s Union). He performed and landed several commercials including one for Toyota. Alan graduated with Honours at York University with a double major in Mass Communications and Fine Arts Cultural Studies. He recorded his first song, over a dancehall riddim on a basic laptop and microphone and since then he’s been hooked. Alan J realized he wanted to perfect his vocal talent by enrolling in vocal training lessons at the Meriam School of Music. He also took private lessons with Diana Yampolski, a world renowned vocal coach. He was inspired to take his music seriously when he travelled to Miami South Beach and improvised vocals alongside Feneiva, a resident band, at the Jazid. After his experience in Miami, Alan J became no stranger to public exposure, performing and hosting many community events in the Greater Toronto Area. Such as, the Toronto’s Tdot Love Concert; with artists like, Kim Davis, Kid Famous, Ray Robinson, & Eternia, the Oakville’s Midnight Madness, the Carousel of Nations Multicultural Festival and York University’s 48th Birthday. Alan J is also a consecutive host for York University’s Next Top Model. Alan J prides himself on his community involvement with the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton. Since becoming board member, six years ago, the federal government has recognized one of his many programs, Black Youth in Action as one of the best community programs in Canada for 2008. He also performed at last year’s Oakville Santa Claus parade, winning the title for Best Community Float. During his latest project, playing one of the lead roles in the musical HAIR, he teamed up with international songwriter/producer Mark Zubek, to prepare for his next step in getting his first album.
