The Newton Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1965 with a mission to provide Newton and surrounding communities with fine music at affordable prices close to home; to provide area volunteer and pre-professional musicians with the opportunity to develop their skills and play high-quality music; and to enhance music appreciation, promote cross-cultural understanding, and build community through outreach programs for students, seniors, and others.
The NSO presents an annual four-concert subscription series of three symphonic programs and one semi-staged opera; with nationally and internationally acclaimed soloists. The repertoire is drawn not only from the standard orchestral repertoire, but also from New Music including some commissions. The orchestra presents one family concert per year: this is the final of the annual Concerto Competition that is open to school age residents of Newton. It also provides a chance for other school age children of Newton in the All City Chorus and Orchestra to work with the orchestra. Since 2001 the Newton Symphony Orchestra has collaborated with the Chinese Arts Exchange to produce a series of “East Meets West” concerts, with Chinese soloists, in which western and Chinese classical music rubs shoulders on the same program.
Pre-concert lectures and program notes enhance the audience’s enjoyment of the music presented. The audience comes principally from within the Route 495 belt and also from throughout New England. All concerts are videotaped for later cablecast by a team from the Newton Community Access Channel, which also cablecasts pre-concert interviews with the conductor of each concert, in their award winning series, Conversations with the Conductor. The orchestra presents an occasional series called “Music and a Movie,” at the West Newton Cinema, designed to enhance the public’s awareness of classical music and provide background to programs presented in concert.
