Biography:
The School of the Arts is proud to offer two orchestra ensembles that meet as regular classes during the school day- the Chamber Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra. The Chamber Orchestra is made up of stringed instruments only- violin, viola, cello, and bass. The Symphony Orchestra is a full orchestra with strings, winds, brass, and percussion instruments. Both orchestras study and perform advanced music literature from orchestral repetoire spanning the past 400 years.

Students in the SOA High School Orchestras are involved in a rigorous routine of rehearsals and concerts. The three major performances that take place during the school year are the Thankful Concert in the fall, the Masterworks Concert in the spring, and the Senior Thesis Concerto Concerts at the end of the year. Each of these concerts is performed in the Rose Maree Myers Theatre for the Performing Arts, located at the school. Other performances are scheduled throughout the year as needed.

The SOA High School Orchestras perform many concerts and services for the Charleston Community. Students are active in the Tri-M Music Honor Society, Chapter 3974 which provides tutoring for community students, benefit concerts, and other service-oriented activities. Students also perform in professional chamber ensembles (quartets, trios, and duets) for weddings, receptions, and other community events. Many of the students perform with the Youth Orchestra of the Lowcountry and other ensembles outside of the school.

SOA High School Orchestra students consistently earn high placements in state and national orchestras. At the 2010 All-State Orchestra, SOA HSO students were placed as Concertmaster (9-10 Orchestra), Assistant Principal Cello (9-10 Orchestra), and Principal Viola (11-12 Orchestra). Students from the SOA High School Orchestras have been accepted into many prestigious colleges, universities, and conservatories. Scholarship earnings are annually in the tens of thousands of dollars range. Alumni from the SOA High School Orchestras have gone on to become teachers, performers, and other music-related professionals.
