Biography:
Formed in 1958, Belgium's oldest chamber orchestra brings together music from the past and the present, developing a vast repertoire of classical, romantic and contemporary music.

The Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie has accompanied the greatest soloists, instrumentalists and singers including José Van Dam, Mstislav Rostropovich, Aldo Ciccolini, Mischa Maïsky, Maurice André, Arthur Grumiaux, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Paul Tortelier, Philippe Hirshhorn, Janos Starker, Frank Braley and Augustin Dumay.

It is a regular partner of the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition of Belgium and the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel.

Augustin Dumay is one of the great musicians and violinists playing today and an outstanding performer of Mozart. He has been principal conductor of the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie since 2003.

Today the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie is making the most of its conductor's dynamism to develop new objectives, a renaissance that is now bearing fruit ! In 2005 the ensemble performed in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw's summer festival, the Festival de Menton and on Radio France in a programme of French music. For the year of Mozart i2006, the orchestra will be performing with, amongst others, Augustin Dumay and Maria João Pires at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and in the international series at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels performing some of the complete Mozart concerti, the others being performed by Anne-Sophie Mutter and Salzburg's Camerata Academica. A major Mozart tour has also been scheduled in China. Invited to perform in the Folles Journées in Nantes, Lisbon, Tokyo and Bilbao, the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie will be playing at the Fondation Gianada (Switzerland) and in Copenhagen.

The ensemble remains loyal to its home in Wallonia. It plays regularly in the French-speaking community and in Belgium, directed from the violin by leader Jean-François Chamberlan. It performs well-known, unknown or contemporary works by composers from its own country. In Mons, where it is in residence, the Orchestra and the Conservatoire Royal de Mons organise the summer festival Côté Cour, Côté Jardin which showcases new talent.

Recordings made by the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie have won many awards including the “Diapason d'or” and “Choc” from Le Monde de la Musique. It has recently recorded a CD with Augustin Dumay of works by Chausson and Ravel.

The Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie benefits from the support of major public institutions: the Ministère de la Communauté Française Wallonie-Bruxelles, the Commissariat Général aux Relations Internationales, the Loterie Nationale and the City of Mons, cultural capital and its place of residence.
