Joey Calderazzo is one of the leading pianists in the jazz realm.
Calderazzo began his piano studies at age 7 and became member of his brother rock band at 14. While studying at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Joey began listening to and sitting in with many great jazz musicians in New York’s club at the age of 17.
Calderazzo met Michael Brecker at a clinic, and soon found himself touring with Michael Brecker Quintet, and played two tracks on his 1988 album Don’t Try This at Home. Brecker produced Calderazzo’s first disc, In the Door in 1990.
Soon Calderazzo built a reputation as one of the most fearless and commanding of the new jazz generation. Two more Blue Note albums, To Know One (1991) with Jerry Bergonzi, Branford Marsalis, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette, and The Traveler (1992) featuring two different trios while Secrets (1993) took a different musical direction as Bob Belden surrounded Calderazzo’s trio with a seven-piece ensemble. Since then, Calderazzo has been working closely with Michael Brecker (Tales from the Hudson and Two Blocks from the Edge) and Branford Marsalis (Romare Bearden Revealed, Eternal, Metamorphosen) touring and recording as a permanent member of their bands.
Calderazzo signed as one of the first artists on Branford’s Marsalis Music label in 2002 and recorded Haiku (2003) his first all-solo disc. His current album, Amanacer(2007), features duo and trio performances with singer Claudia Acuña and guitarist Romero Lubambo as well as solo tracks.
Now Calderazzo continues to perform as a solo pianist, as the head of a trio and quartet, and as a member of the Branford Marsalis Quartet.
