Mattan Klein was born and raised in Jerusalem, Israel. He began his musical training at age 7, taking piano lessons, and soon after switched to flute. Originally classically trained, Mr. Klein was attracted to a wide variety of popular music genres, and toured Europe and North America with several folklore groups from age 13 onwards. At 15 Mr. Klein recognized his ultimate expressive tool - Jazz. He began to perform and compose with a Jerusalem based ensemble and at 16 won first prize at the Pizmon-Tichon composition competition in (presenting music set to lyrics by poet Nathan Alterman), an award which marked a beginning of a promising musical career.
After ending his military service, Mr. Klein established the Massa U'Mattan ensemble, which soon gained acknowledgment on the local Jazz scene. Performances included national TV networks, radio stations (voice of Israel), and major festivals (The Israel Festival, The Jerusalem International Film Festival, The Israel Museum Jazz Series).
Upon completion of a year of studies at the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem with excellence in performance and theory, Mr. Klein decided to complete his studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston with the help of a large merit scholarship. He soon blended into the Boston Jazz scene, collaborating with vibraphonist Victor Mendoza of the Percussion Department faculty at Berklee, and producing his tour to Israel over the following summer. Mr. Klein was the first flutist to receive the Berklee Woodwind Dept. Achievement Award. He gained a reputation of an innovative improviser as well as a proficient studio musician, and was often called upon to play with faculty members and visiting artists including Giovanni Hidalgo and Billy Childs. Soon after graduating (Summa Cum Laude) Mr. Klein moved to New York.
Mattan Klein performs extensively on stages across North America, and is often touring the world as a leader and as a sideman. Past performances include Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington DC, New Jersey Performing Arts Center programs, Blues Alley in Washington DC, 92nd street Y in New York, Regatta-Bar in Boston, and The Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Internationally Mattan was featured at the Tel Aviv International Jazz Festival, 2009, Ottawa International Writers Festival and the Muskoka Music Festival in Canada, The Festival of Jazz in Binyamina, Israel. He has played on stages in Brazil and across Europe, and led the Seeds of Sun Israeli world-Jazz ensemble on East Asian stages in Vietnam, Hong Kong and the Philippines. His performance schedule also includes engagements with his own Mattan Klein Jazz/fusion quintet for Jazz societies across America (Blues Alley Jazz Society, The Tennessee Jazz and Blues Society, New Mexico Jazz Workshop), and with individual composers/collaborators such as Omer Klein, Pablo Vergara, Juancho Herrera and many more. Mattan has performed with Israeli pop icons such as Shlomo Gronich, Miki Gavrielov and Yoni Rechter. Mattan teaches at the prestigious Thelma Yelin High School for the Arts, alongside Israel's most praised Jazz icons and Jazz educators.
Mattan's year 2001 album 'Love Alive' was released after receiving a special grant from Jerusalem mayor at the time, Mr. Ehud Olmert. The 2008 release Live at the Nashville Jazz Workshop by Klein's quintet is being distributed in Israel by High Fidelity LTD. Mr. Kleinís awards include the 2000 John Lennon Songwriting Contest under the Jazz Composition category and the 2003 USA Songwriting Contest, he also received support from America-Israel Cultural Foundation. Mattan's Composition Itcha ('with you') was included in the September 2005 CD edition of Global Rhythm Magazine in New York, the leading World Music publication in The USA. Mattan is an artist in residence at the National JCC Maccabi Artsfest and is the only artist to participate in all 7 Artsfests (including New Orleans, LA and Orange County, CA in the summer of 2009).
