Melbourne Festival is one of Australia's leading international arts festivals and has an outstanding reputation for presenting unique international and Australian events in the fields of dance, theatre, music, visual arts, multimedia, free and outdoor events over 17 days each October.
This year there will be plenty of music at the Festival from across the world. Konono No. 1 will be making us dance to the beats of their home-made instruments, Kronos Quartet will give a stella performance of Sun Rings, the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra will inspire us with Maxim Rysanov, and we will be transported to the deeep Rajasthani desert with The Manganiyar Seduction by Roysten Abel. The contemporary music program will also feature the likes of Syrian-American hip-hop artist The Narcycist, Aesop Rock, country swooners Okkervil River, Japan's post-rock legends Mono, noise-art virtuosos Black Dice, and the infamous Jello Biafra.
The Festival will close with a special concert called 'notes from the hard road and beyond' where special guests, Mavis Staples, Joss Stone, Rickie-Lee Jones, Emmanuel Jal, and local Paul Dempsey will join with the Black Arm Band to present a musical journey from revolution to redemption. notes from the hard road and beyond chronicles an inspiring canon of songs from civil rights, anti-war and women's suffrage to environmentalism, feminism and the abolition movement in a glorious and daring celebration of the music of protest, rebellion, love and hope.
Weaving together music by Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Leonard Cohen, Pete Seeger and Green Day, to name just a few, notes from the hard road and beyond is a unique and joyous testament to the indomitable nature of the human spirit, expressed through music.
