Come Hear the World!
The First Annual Ojai World Music Festival Sept. 30th -Oct. 2nd.
This fall, Ojai’s Libbey Bowl will be the site of the valley’s newest festival when the Ojai World Music Festival takes the stage with music from the far corners of the world. Festival organizers guarantee an exciting and joyful experience with acclaimed musicians that have brought audiences to their feet everywhere they have played. The Ojai World Music Festival is the brain-child of award-winning composer and musician John Zeretzke, and Brian Bemel of Performances To Grow On and the Ojai Storytelling Festival. The Ojai World Music Festival joins the list of great festivals held in the Ojai Valley and promises an eclectic mix of engaging music. Listeners will have the opportunity to hear rare and exotic instruments like the Yaqui water drum, giant bamboo stomp tubes, and floating musical gourds and many more musical treasures. Many of the instruments that will be played have been exhibited in museums, but are rarely heard on the concert stage. With a goal of preserving and carrying on ancient musical traditions, the Ojai World Music Festival offers listeners the opportunity to experience ancient traditions in a fresh and vibrant way.
With a variety of unique concert performances, workshops, educational programs and some very special events, the Ojai World Music Festival will offer an exciting experience with award winning musicians that have been featured at festivals and concert stages throughout the world.. The festival will be held at the brand new Libbey Bowl and the Ojai Art Center. In addition to the many performances for the public, there will be a special educational outreach performance designed for students of all grades on Friday, Sept. 30 at Libbey Bowl at 10 am with tickets for students priced at just $5. The festival fundraiser will be headlined by Samite and his “Gorillas of Uganda” program, a spectacular multi-media performance with live music and stunning images that will be held at the famed Larry Hagman “Heaven” residence atop Sulphur Mountain. A variety of hands-on workshops including drumming, flute making and singing will be available during the festival for those that want to experience world music first hand. Tickets for individual concerts and workshops as well as passes for multiple events are available by phone at 805-646-8907 or online at www.ojaiworldmusic.org
"Samite wraps his warm voice around melodies that seem to rise up off the Ugandan plateau, caressed by his kalimbas and other native instruments."
"On Ensemble combines 21st century experimental sound with centuries-old Noh and Kabuki music... With the combination of ancient drum rhythm and the scratching on a turntable, the piece was a mix of old and new that took one from a primeval place to a contemporary dance floor. The combination was a great mix, technically precise, and the unique sound was delightful to hear."
