At age 16, Leslie Ford began teaching him-self how to play the trumpet, and at age 18 he was playing professionally with some of the hottest jazz bands in Newark and New York. At age 19 he was on the road traveling and performing with a top 40s group and with jazz bands from Canada to the United State. In the 70s and 80s Mr. Ford has traveled with Frank Fosterís Big Band, James Spalding Quintet, Zahir Batinís Ensemble, Tommy Gryce Quartet, Phil Bowler Sextet, Ron Barten Ensemble, Stave Torra Quartet and has been on the band-stand performing as music director with the Rutgers Paul Robison Jazz Ensemble which featured Kenny Baron, Stanly Turrentine, Garry Berten George Benson Steve Nelson and other. As a composer, many groups from jazz to pop has perform Leslieís compositions and arrangements.
In 1984, Leslie co-founded the New Brunswick Jazz Collective. The Collectiveís purpose is to promote jazz and develop a training grand for young up-and coming artist. To get the Collective off to a good start Leslie opened with his compositions and arrangements with a 14 peace big band at the Ledge on College Avenue Campus, Rutgers the State University.
To date, Leslie is best known for organizing musical events and a collective of players to perform every genre of music to meet a diverse clientele, from large corporate functions to intimate social gatherings. In 1989, Mr. Ford founded his own school called the Jazz Institute of New Jersey, Inc. The school is designed to help youth ages 8 to 18.
