Biography:
Zachary May teaches orchestra and guitar at Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, IL. Mr. May received his bachelorís degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During his undergraduate studies, he was active as a cellist in the University of Illinois Symphony and the RBD String quartet, a bassist in several University of Illinois Jazz combos, and as director, violinist, guitarist, and cellist in the Champaign-Urbana Swedish Folk Ensemble. During his studies at the University of Illinois, Mr. May attended one semester of studies at Uppsala University in Sweden, where he served as assistant principal cellist of the Uppsala Royal Academic Symphony Orchestra. In 2010, Mr. May presented at the American String Teachersí Association National Conference on the topic of Swedish Folk Music, exploring the particularities of dance, participation, and tradition in Swedish traditional music and their implications to American music education. Mr. May continues to perform Scandinavian and American Old Time fiddle music on violin, cello, guitar, and bass. He has also arranged music of a variety of styles for the Jazz String Ensemble at Vernon Hills High School, where he taught during the 2011-2012 school year.
