The EKU Percussion ensemble provides the opportunity to perform the various literature composed for percussion ensemble. Members of the ensemble typically perform in various sized groups from duos to large ensembles of eight to twelve players. The class is open to percussion majors and also to non-percussion majors who must audition for Mr. Koontz. Potential ensemble members should prepare solos or etudes on snare drum and keyboard percussion. Sight reading is also tested. There are typically two concerts presented in the School of Music, one each semester. We also expect to do percussion ensemble run-outs to local area schools in the spring semester. While most of the repertoire has been composed within the last century, cultures in other parts of the world have had 'percussion ensembles' since the dawn of civilization. Accordingly, the EKU Percussion Ensemble seeks to explore music of other cultures, most notably those of South America, Africa, and the Caribbean. The steel band and African Drum and Dance Ensemble, perform all over the Kentucky region an average of ten engagements each year.
