The Galilee Chamber Orchestra was founded in 2012 by Polyphony Education, a Nazareth-based non-profit that provides opportunities for music education and other innovative educational programs to more than 2,000 Arab and Jewish Israeli youth. With emphasis on work in Arab schools, these programs help close the education gap within Israeli society while creating common ground for Jewish and Arab youngsters to come together around classical music. Polyphony Education believes that music has a unique power to transcend cultural and social boundaries, educating both performer and audience in the art of listening and communicating. Creating new channels for engagement between young members of diverse communities is an essential step towards the creation of a just and peaceful society in Israel. The Galilee Chamber Orchestra was established with the goal of leading the development of cultural life in the Galilee on par with Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Polyphony Education's main funding currently comes from the US-based 501(c)3 organization The Polyphony Foundation, co-founded in 2011 by New York investor Craig Cogut and renowned concert violinist Nabeel Abboud-Ashkar, who also serves as the Director of Polyphony Education.
