Parviz Rahmanpanah was born in Tehran, Iran. At the tender age of 9, with the encouragement of his father, he enrolled in Tehran’s National Conservatory, where he chose târ as his main instrument. Later, in 1976 he came to the U.S to continue his studies in music.
In the 80’s he joined the late diva of traditional Iranian music, Haydeh, as a group director.
In 1993, Parviz began a new approach in playing the tar. An approach which was completely different than the classical Iranian methods which were the norm at that time.
By bringing together the timbre of the târ and the versatility of electronic instruments, he attracted many younger listeners to the beautiful and soul soothing sound of the traditional târ,
Parviz has made history by this new approach and a pioneer in the field of Iranian cross over style of music. By breaking the cultural barriers in music, he paved the way for the talented new generation of young Iranian musicians to do the same:
By creating a harmonized fusion between classical Iranian music and Western Electronic sounds, Parviz has done his part in bridging the gap between the two cultures of Iran, and the West, through the power of music.
Parviz graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts degree in ethnomusicology.
His latest album, The Last Secret, featuring Shujaat Hussein Khan (the world renowned sitar master) and Abhiman Kaushal a renowned tabla player, is due due for release in November 2012.
