In 1955, a group of community minded music lovers and amateur musicians founded the Garden State Philharmonic Symphony Society to provide quality symphonic music to the residents of the Jersey Shore. Today, under the baton of Anthony LaGruth, the GSP consists of a highly respected professional orchestra, a three-tiered youth orchestra, a community chorus, and a substantial community education program. Illustrious guest artists such as Schlomo Mintz, Carter Brey, and Colin Carr have performed to the public’s delight. The GSP Orchestra has been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts for its contribution to the American Masterpieces Initiative, and nominated for a 2011 NJ People’s Choice Award for Favorite Orchestra/Symphony. Under the direction of Maestro Anthony LaGruth, the GSP played a pivotal role in the premiere of a new work by Joan Tower, Made in America, which has since earned multiple Grammy Awards. The GSP’s Composer-in-Residence, Patrick Ippolito’s orchestral fantasy, Mahler Grooves, was performed by the GSP in 2011. Mr. Ippolito has served as an orchestrator on several film scores and video game scores. The GSP is the Orchestra in Residence of Ocean County College.
