Born in Tennessee, Charles Ellison completed his music studies at Indiana University, with a break for a tour of duty during the Vietnam War. Love took him to Montreal where he has lived, played and taught since 1980. Ellison leads the Jazz Studies program in the music department at Concordia University.
He is a chartered member of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. He continues that affiliation through his contributions to the Jazz Oral History Project. For 17 years at the University of Massachusetts Jazz in July Workshop in Improvisation he worked with notables such as Max Roach, Billy Taylor and Ted Dunbar.
As a professional trumpeter he worked with greats such as Cannonball Adderly, Marvin Gaye, Henry Mancini and the Staple Singers. Canadian musicians of note include Jeri Brown, Dave Turner, Jean Beaudet, Charles Biddle and Vic Vogel.
