The UNF Chorale has been entertaining audiences since UNF first opened its doors. Performing 3 to 4 concerts per semester, UNF Chorale rehearsals are Monday through Thursday during the noon hour. Faculty, staff, and community members are considered for membership. Gathering enthusiastic singers from every college across the University, the non-auditioned 60-member group has toured throughout the southern United States and abroad in Austria, Czech Republic, and Portugal.
The May 2007 Portugal Tour (partially funded by a UNF Transformational Learning Opportunity Grant) featured an hour-long a cappella program as well as Eurico Carrapatoso's Magnificat performed with the composer in attendance providing commentary in Lagos, Elvas, Évora, and Lisboa. Additionally, the Chorale collaborated with the Grupo Coral de Lagos, Portugal’s early music group Musica Eborae, and the University of Évora Chamber Singers during these performances. The Chorale has recently performed such works as Bach's St. Matthew Passion and Cantata 172 “Erschallet, ihr Lieder”, Beethoven's Mass in C, Mozart's Solemn Vespers, Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs, Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, and the North American premieres of Carrapatoso's Magnificat, Roig-Francoli’s Dona eis Requiem (in memory of the innocent victims of war and terror), along with many pieces from a variety of styles and languages, from early music masterpieces to rousing spirituals.
This year, the UNF Chorale hosted Jacksonville’s Intercollegiate Choral Festival in October with JU and FCCJ as well as the 2nd annual UNF Feast of Carols in Lazzara Hall, performed our Fall Choral Showcase with the Chamber Music Society of the Good Shepherd, in addition to our annual Sing into Spring recital concert.
As a non-international touring year, we are touring only locally, however select members of the Chorale have been invited to attend the IFCM World Symposium of Choral Music in Copenhagen, Denmark, while others will be representing UNF in the University of Aveiro Opera Workshop and Festival this July. The 2008-2009 school year will be even more exciting as the Chorale anticipates its next international tour!
