Dr. Ori Leshman | Conductor, Composer & Lecturer
Ori Leshman is considered one of the most remarkable representatives of the younger generation of Israeli musicians. He holds a doctorate from Bar Ilan University, and a dual M.A. degree (summa cum laude) from Tel Aviv University: in conducting (supervised by Prof. Noam Sheriff); and in composition (supervised by Prof. Issac Sadai).
Leshman was awarded a special scholarship from the "Israel America Foundation" for training with maestro Zubin Mehta at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. He also trained in Baroque and Renaissance music with maestro Ivor Bolton.
Leshman has conducted orchestras and opera house productions in Israel and abroad, including: the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Teatro Verdi in Trieste-Italy, the New Israeli National Opera, the Israel Camerata Jerusalem Orchestra, the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra, the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, the MIAGI Festival Orchestra, the Sibiu Philharmonic Orchestra, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, the New Haifa Symphony Orchestra, and the Sinfonietta Beer-Sheva.
Leshman is the artistic director of the festival "Sounds of Childhood" in Holon.
Leshman is the artistic director of "Shir-Ad" the Association for the Heritage of Hebrew Song.
Leshman composes music for concert hall, opera, theater and the film industry. His personal style is strongly influenced by both Western Classical music and Israeli Oriental music traditions.
His most recent work - “Oriental Fair” - for singers, actors, orchestra and video art, composed to lyrics by the poet Chaim Guri, was premiered this year at the Jerusalem Theatre. This innovative composition combines several musical genres.
His mono-opera “Lea” won the Rabinovich Prize, and has been performed several times in Israel and New York. His love for Israeli poetry led him to compose a series of Lieder to the texts of several of Israel’s greatest poets. He established two series of concerts dedicated to poetry, at Beit Avi-Chai in Jerusalem and the Tzavta Theater in Tel Aviv. The “Voice of Music Festival in Upper Galilee” dedicated a concert to his compositions based on poetry, which was recorded by the Israeli Broadcasting Authority Leshman's compositions are frequently played in Israel and abroad.
His work encompasses many areas of music, including presenting lectures and radio-broadcasting.
Dr. Leshman is a faculty member at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzeliya and at Levinsky College.
In recognition of his work and accomplishments he has been awarded, among others, the Israel Culture Ministry Prize for composing "Oriental Fair" for singers, actors and orchestra.
Bar Ilan University’s prestigious "President Scholarship" for Ph.D. studies (to continue his research on the music of Kurt Weill); the Israeli Parliament (the Knesset) award for excellency by a Ph.D. Student; the "Rabinovich Foundation Prize"; the "Rubin Academy" first prize for composers; and the "Jeffery Mark Yagoda" prize for choir composition.
