Biography:
The Berklee World Strings are devoted to the art of ensemble playing and the development of new music that features improvisation and world rhythms.

The Berklee World Strings are conducted by cellist and Berklee Associate Professor Eugene Friesen. A graduate of the Yale School of Music where he studied with Brazilian cellist Aldo Parisot, Friesen is active internationally as a concert artist, composer, conductor and teacher. Friesen has won three Grammy Awards for his work with the Paul Winter Consort. His passion for the responsive flow of improvisatory music has led him to work and record with such diverse artists as Dave Brubeck, Toots Thielemans, Betty Buckley, Will Ackerman, Joe Lovano, and Dream Theater.

Karim was the Chief Principal Conductor and Director for the Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra from 2007-2012, an Orchestra of 126 members playing primarily classical European music. Stemming from an innate passion for music Karim began directing 25 years ago, taking over the show for the Iraqi symphony in 2006. His need and desire for development began when he asked himself "What do millions of people need and want?"

Despite a number of hardships affecting the area, Karim rose above the bombings and demolished buildings, to create a new life form in the area. Utilizing his optimism and enthusiasm, Karim drew in new members from a variety of backgrounds transforming the rather dim perspective into a symbolic alternative. Offering hospitality and hope, Karim launched a youth orchestra to teach music, civics and manners to 300 children.

His greatest accomplishments have been simply overcoming the obstacles of instability and vagueness through civility, refinement and cultivation as he states "It does not matter what others do to you, what matters is how you react if you should." He attributes his success to dedication, determination, hard work and belief. He intends to share his knowledge and success with the populous and helping as much as possible.
