“Shira” (song in Hebrew)= “Rana” (song in Arabic)
“Shirana,” an Arab-Jewish women’s choir, was established in 2008 by the Arab Jewish Community Center in Jaffa.
Twenty Jewish, Muslim, and Christian women comprise the choir’s members.
The choir was created out of a desire to provide these women with an expressive outlet, an opportunity for their voices to seek meaning in an area where regrettably, they are not heard enough.
“Shirana’s” work is based on the profound belief in the power of all shared creativity, especially singing, to encourage recognition, familiarization and the collapsing of barriers between people of different backgrounds.
Through their singing, the women manifest a lasting partnership, the hope for life and peace, as well as the range of humane emotions that everyone experiences as human beings.
The choir’s varied repertoire includes songs in Hebrew, Arabic, and from nations the world over.
“Shirana” has performed in many events, such as at the Arab Jewish Community Center in Jaffa, the Peres Center for Peace, Tel Aviv University, the “Border” Event in Bat Yam, the Duet and “Blue” Festival in Jaffa, and the International Street Theater Festival in Bat Yam, for the latter of which they won a prize in 2010.
