For Danny by Gus Ruchman
As I was composing For Danny, I tried to express the change from the more upbeat mood of the first movement to the more evocative tone of the second, and tell a story through the music. I also attempted to incorporate elements of the classical, jazz, and modern genres to create a blend of various modes of tonal communication.
The piece had its premiere at a Daniel Pearl World Music Days celebration at my high school in October 2008, performed by an international group of musicians. Participating in World Music Days has been both an elevating and a humbling experience. It is a true honor to be able to share, in my small way, in a much greater project that continues to give shape to Danny’s vision and voice to his hopes of harmony for humanity.
